Pain-Free Dental Implants: What to Expect

Pain free dental implants

Most people are aware of the benefits dental implants can bring. They offer a relatively permanent way to replace missing teeth and can give you the confidence to smile again. But, the idea of having a metal screw inserted into your gums and jawbone can make many think twice before getting an implant.

Are dental implants really painful or are there any pain-free procedures that you can opt for?

Here’s what you need to know.

How Dental Implants Work

As mentioned before, the surgery required to insert the metal post into the jawbone is one of the things that put a lot of people off and prevent them from getting the treatment they need.

However, the bone where the metal screw will be inserted doesn’t have any nerve endings or pain receptors. The surrounding gum tissue is more sensitive, but you will be given an anesthetic so that you don’t feel anything during the procedure. This way, the dentist can cut through the gum tissue and create a small opening and then drill into the bone without you feeling anything.

So, Do They Hurt?

If you’ve ever had any dental treatment, such as a filling or dental crown, then getting dental implants is similar. The dentist will first numb the area to prepare it for the surgery. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, you won’t feel any pain, except for a bit of pressure.

The recovery is also easier compared to other dental procedures, such as a tooth extraction. If you have had a tooth extracted before, then you know that you don’t feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure, just a bit of pressure, which is totally normal. However, after a tooth extraction you have to be careful not to get a dry socket and may feel a bit of discomfort, but generally, dental implants are generally less invasive and pain-free.

Because getting a dental implant is a straightforward procedure, you can usually get back to your regular routine the very next day. In most cases, you won’t even need pain medication as the discomfort is minimal and can be managed with ice packs or a bit of warm saltwater rinse.

If you had multiple implants or bone grafting, you may feel a bit more pain and possibly need more time off. But even so, it will only take a couple of days for the sensitivity and discomfort to go away.
