Recently, Dr. Abtin Shahriari, our oral surgeon at Greater Atlanta Oral Facial Surgery, attended the sixth Annual Dentalxp Live Surgical Hands-On event at the Metropolitan University in Santos Brazil. This three-day hands-on conference is a course for developing dental professionals as well as an outreach program to provide surgical procedure for underprivileged patients. Dr. Abtin served as a visiting faculty member during the event.
The Annual Dentalxp Live Surgical Hands-On Conference
The three day event for dental professionals took place at Unimes, Metropolitan University in Santos, Brazil. Upon completion of this conference, dental professionals learned how to plan and treat surgical cases more effectively and successfully. They also learned how to perform a number of different surgical procedures. The exact procedures varied based on each patient’s needs. Typically, they covered issues such as extraction site grafting, sinus lifts, grafting connective tissue, and more.
One-on-One Training From Dr. Abtin Shahriari
The course offered developing dental professionals one-on-one training from Dr. Abtin Shahriari. Dr. Abtin is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is considered to be one of the top oral surgeons in the field of oral surgery. Dr. Abtin completed his Bachelor of Science at Emory University, and received his Masters in Public Health in Epidemiology and International Health at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health. Then, he received his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Residency at Emory University School of Medicine Department.
Patients Served at the Conference
During this mini-residency, many local citizens were able to get essential and life changing surgical procedures and over 72 patients were treated. The attending doctors placed over 180 implants. In particular, there were 22 patients who needed full arch implants. That is when all the teeth in an upper or lower arch need to be replaced. This was a great service to the patients who had been missing teeth for their entire life and now could now enjoy eating again.
There were also 15 sinus elevations. A sinus elevation surgery is when an oral surgeon adds extra bones to the back of the upper jaw between the molars and the maxillary sinuses. This can be essential for patients who have suffered bone loss due to periodontal disease or bone resorption after tooth loss.
There were also 14 block grafts. A bone block fixation or graft is used to stabilize bone grafts to encourage the natural regeneration of bone in the oral cavity. This procedure can be an essential precursor for dental implants in patients who don’t have the existing bone structure to support implants. Finally, the oral surgeons did a total of 60 guided bone regenerations (GFR) and platelet rich fibrin (PRF) combinations. In this procedure, the PRF services as a membrane to guide to regeneration of bone, and ultimately, the body absorbs the PRF.
Event Attendees
The event drew 20 attendees, five alumni, and eight international proctors as well as the entire Implant, Perio and Prosthodontic faculties at the Unimes Metro University.
Dr. Abtin used the same expertise that he practices every day at Greater Atlanta Oral Facial Surgery and taught other dental professionals around the world. He views this opportunity as a way for him to give back to the communities locally and internationally. The seventh annual course is scheduled for December 2018.
