Multiple Extractions

Greater Atlanta Oral Facial Surgery

As the jaw surgeons at Greater Atlanta Oral Facial Surgery will tell you, multiple teeth removal is much different than a single tooth extraction. When multiple teeth are removed, your bones must be smoothed and shaped before your denture can be placed. As a result, you should follow these post-operative instructions to ensure a smooth recovery process.

Bleeding

There will be a small amount of bleeding that will occur after your teeth removal, so you will need to place gauze and apply pressure on the affected area for a minimum of 30 minutes. If the bleeding persists or you experience severe bleeding, contact your jaw surgeon immediately.

Swelling

There will be a significant amount of swelling in the two days following your oral surgery. In some instances, you may even see some discoloration around your eye. To alleviate these issues, apply ice and ice packs to the extraction sites for the first 36 hours after your procedure. If the discoloration continues after three days, you can then use a warm, moist towel to help eliminate it.

You may also experience a sore throat because of swollen muscles around the extraction sites. This discomfort should subside in the two to three days following your oral surgery.

Medications

If you feel any mild post-operative pain, take over the counter medications like Acetaminophen on Ibuprofen. For severe pain, use the medication prescribed to you by your jaw surgeon.

Antibiotics

To prevent infection following your teeth removal, you will be prescribed an antibiotic. You must follow the instructions and take the full dose of treatment regardless of your symptoms to ensure you recover properly.

Oral Hygiene

Following your oral surgery, do not rinse your mouth out for the first day or while you are experiencing any bleeding. Your jaw surgeon will advise you to engage in regular warm salt rinses after every meal and every four hours to clear the extraction area of any food or debris.

Diet

Immediately after your teeth removal, you should limit your consumption to soft foods or liquids. As your mouth heals and you feel more comfortable, you can resume your regular diet.

Temperature

You may experience a rise in temperature in the 24 to 48 hours after your oral surgery. If it continues for three days or longer, contact your jaw surgeon for further instructions.

Dentures

Your jaw surgeon may insert immediate dentures after your teeth removal. Should you develop any sore spots, they will schedule you for a post-operative visit to adjust them and relieve this discomfort.

At Greater Atlanta Oral Facial Surgery, our jaw surgeons will provide you with individualized care tailored just for you to give you the smile makeover you have always wanted.
